Wind based percussion instruments
Exploring principles of wind based instruments through percussion.

Concept 1
This concept was to develop a percussion instrument based on the principle of sound used in wind instruments but to experiment how the sound waves interact with change in mediums. We used water as our secondary medium and experimented with how it affects the sound when the air column has 2 different mediums present.
Changed Parameters -
- Variable air column in 2 different mediums
- Changing source of vibration

For this prototype we made use of air as our primary medium and water as our secondary medium. We used an inverted stool and kept a bucket in between its legs and used that as our rig. Then we tied elastic from the legs of the stool and put the PVC pipe (2.5inches) through the crossing of the elastics and attached a ring so that the main pipe won’t fall through.

Concept 2
The concept was to develop a percussion instrument based on the principle of sound used in wind instruments. It has a changing air column and has a singular source of vibration. It uses the concept of variable air column to suspend the sound.
Changed Parameters -
- Variable air column
- Changing source of vibration
- Non linear air columns

Making
To make this concept we made use of two 2.5inch thick PVC pipes, three L connectors for the pipe, one 3cm thick pipe, a sponge ball and some cotton. The variable air column pipe is a little longer than the pipe we are using as the source of vibration. We made use of masking tape so seal off all the joints to ensure no loss of air pressure in the column.
